Caledonian Railway Collections Volunteer 

Responsibilities: 

  • Collection inventory: Checking items against a catalogue and recording new additions. 

  • Condition checking: Noting any issues which may need addressed, and making recommendations for their solutions. 

  • Product level cataloguing: Entering information on physical items and supporting paperwork. 

  • Information management: Assessing the current cataloguing system in place in the collection and making suggestions for improvement.

ART ON SCOTLAND, GLASGOW

Events Management Assistant

Responsibilities: 

  • Public relations: Managing social media responding to professional and public enquiries. 

  • Content writing: Maintaining the company blog and writing articles for external publications. 

  • Information management: Creating a filing and cataloguing system for the company’s records, contacts, financial information and stock. 

  • Event management: Assisting with the running and organisation of arts events in Scotland. 

Training received: 

  • Search Engine Optimisation: To assist me in the running of the company’s website and social media, I received training in search engine optimisation and the identification and use of keywords to improve web rankings.

I work as the archivist for a small LGBT+ book resource and am working to create a more user-friendly online catalogue for the organisation.

Archiving Volunteer

Responsibilities: 

  • Collection inventory: Recording information and checking items against a master sheet. 

  • Condition checking: Noting any issues which may need addressed. 

  • Photographing collection items: Making a visual record of the archive’s physical items. 

  • Product level cataloguing: Entering information on physical items and supporting paperwork. 

  • Digitisation preparation and support: Supporting the audio preservation engineer in the preparation and preservation of open reels, cassettes and minidisc recordings. 

  • Content research: Transcribing audio files and noting pertinent information in the catalogue. 

Training received: 

  • Curation: I attended a curation training day which focused on ways to engage the general public with the contents of an archive. I was then given the opportunity to curate my own project, which focused on the use of home remedies in Scotland and the British Isles.

Founder

I ran a series of zine and small publication events in Belfast, the first of which was part of the annual Belfast Book Festival in 2018.

I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in English with Creative writing at Queen’s University Belfast, with a focus on medieval literature and cultures. I graduated in Summer 2016 with First Class Honours and a scholarship to complete my postgraduate degree.

I am currently studying for a second Master’s in Information Management and Preservation with a focus on historical archives. So far, I have completed modules in ‘Archives, Records & Information Management’, ‘Description, Cataloguing & Navigation’, ‘Records & Evidence’ and ‘Medieval Palaeography’.
